great if your thinking of writing a novel

the chapters are really short and succinct. I guess each one is it's own pep talk. Not bad at all. some transferable tips too.

A big trove of knowledge and motivation

I found this book while going through a dip in motivation to finish my second manuscript. It held my hand and lifted me up all the way from beginning to end. A wonderful book and incredibly well-narrated.

Inspiring

Listening to this during the day really helped my writer's block - I've been stuck for a while and unsure how to progress a story and feeling a bit deflated, but this really re-inspired me. There are so many lovely phrases and descriptions to get you pumped for writing, so much so it led to a 5 hour session for me that resulted in resolving the story issues I'd been having. It also made me want to continue and sparked ideas for others. I really do recommend it, even if you just have it on in the background. The way it's read is with such enthusiasm and positivity that it's hard not to be affected by it.

It does what it states

This is a Concise clear and a good guide for the writer in you. While there are many out there I find this one easier to follow then most. I feel my hand is being held as I listen and walk through with the chapters. It is as reassuring as it is clear.

Better than other writing books I read

Highly motivational book on writing, would definitely recommend to struggling aspiring writers. Each pep talk includes an analogy and a recommendation. Not every pep talk will be for you, but there should at the very least be one that speaks to you.

Disappointing

Luckily, this is a 'free' audiobook, so not much harm done except for a bit of wasted time. In one of the chapters, the author describes how he took classes from a well-known writer who gave him scathing feedback, deeply wounding his ego. Well, as unkind as it may sound, I'm afraid the well-known writer might have been right (even though she could have phrased her feedback more kindly). So there's not all that much wisdom to be gained from this book. Apart from the fact that it can be vital to listen to feedback instead of instantly dismiss it because our ego doesn't want to see the truth within.

So this is one of those books with puzzlingly high ratings that turns out average at best. My advice would be to give it a try as long as it's in the plus catalogue and see whether it's for you. There is, however, a wealth of quite frankly better books for writers out there. So if this one doesn't inspire you, please do look further. Don't give up, keep writing.
