Pearl Harbor rimane l'esempio di un'azione militare rapida e vittoriosa, incisiva, praticamente perfetta, nata dall'equilibrio tra un piano intelligente, preparato con pazienza e tenacia, e un'esecuzione impeccabile, contro un nemico superiore per forze; al tempo stesso, però, Pearl Harbor mostrò anche che in una guerra moderna una sola battaglia, per quanto importante, non può essere decisiva, se non è supportata dalla superiorità materiale, e da un disegno strategico vincente. Gli americani confidavano proprio in questo: il Giappone, invece, l'avrebbe imparato a caro prezzo.
