Summary

For Gervase Phinn growing old is not about a leisurely walk to the pub for a game of dominoes or snoozing in his favourite armchair. As this sparkling collection of his very best humorous writing shows, he may be ‘out of the woods’ but he is certainly not ‘over the hill’.

Looking back over more than sixty years of family life, teaching, inspecting schools, writing and public speaking, Gervase never fails to unearth humour, character, warmth and wisdom from the most diverse of experiences, whether they be growing up in Rotherham with the most un-Yorkshire like of names or describing why loud mobile phone users get his goat.

Brimming with nostalgia, gently mocking life’s absurdities, never shy of an opinion, this is Gervase Phinn at his wittiest, twinkly-eyed best.

brilliant

as always, funny, sad, poignant and thought provoking, a masterpiece in social observance and social history. Beautiful language and reflections on a time gone by where everything seemed happier and simpler than life as we know it now. Pure escapism and thoroughly enjoyable. If I was to have a dinner party I would love Gervaise Phinn to be present!

Out of the woods, time to reminisce, laugh out loud, and connect with school yard characters!

Anyone who loves to reminisce and gentle humour, maybe us oldies over 50,,,,reliving our young school days, great for travel listening and to snuggle up helping me go to sleep, inevitably reawakening a few times through the night with story still going and easy to pick up again, enjoy.

I loved this book

If you could sum up Out of the Woods but not Over the Hill in three words, what would they be?

Witty, fun, intresting

What did you like best about this story?

I loved listening to this book. After reading other of Gervase's books this book gives you an insight into where he got many of his ideas for settings , characters and story lines.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I enjoyed Gervase's ramblings about the English language. They were fascinating and written in such a way that they also humorous

Any additional comments?

Although I enjoyed this book, if you have read his other books, you do find yourself covering the same material that he has written before.

Wonderful

Another really entertaining book by Gervais. All his books are fantastic. I must say I’ve never laughed so much. And also I find them so comforting, they remind us older ones of how life used to be .

A good read

Perhaps rather repetitious of some of the content of his previous books but still an amusing, insightful and comfortable read.
