About this listen

From the author of Becoming Ted and The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle, an 'utterly joyful' audiobook about love, friendship and identity.

Two men. Twenty years of friendship. One love.

2002

Danny arrives at Manchester University determined not to hide from the world any longer. This is the year his life will begin.

He locks eyes with a handsome stranger across the hall at the Fresher's Fair. It starts with a wink and soon Danny and Guy are best friends.

2022

Now, both single for the first time in years, Danny and Guy return to the confetti-covered streets of the Gay Village for Manchester Pride.

After years of shared adventures and lost dreams, Danny finally plans to share the secret he has been keeping for two decades. He has always been in love with Guy.

Could this weekend be the end of a twenty-year friendship...or the start of something new and even more beautiful?

Beautifully written

I absolutely adored this book. The writing is sublime and I really grew to love the characters. It had everything from high camp, drama, heartache and of course love. Not my usual choice but I’m a total convert and will read everything that Matt creates from now on. I really didn’t want this one to end.

More than a will-they-won’t-they

This was lovely, at first glance it’s a Queer as Folk meets One Day-esque romcom and it does deliver in those regards, but there’s more heart, serious themes and analysis of queer love beneath that.

Heart warming and uplifting

Felt the character of Danny, went through lots of emotions with him on his journey despite him being a gay man and me being a straight woman, but overall felt uplifted and loved every minute of this book. Well read and performed too.

Narrator is crazy good

The story is fine, not a cliche and have some depth but I feel the resolving is too quick. The narrator is extraordinary, comforting voice, doing so many accents. Playing a northern accent is hard, but he can let me tell the difference of a northern gay man and a northern mom. Really enjoyed it, thank you.

The importance of boundaries and communication

Heart felt reality. The differences in characters and the need for communication. The importance of loyalty In Friendships. Loved the story line and both the main characters .

The 20 year gap.

The 20 year gap alternating between chapters took some following but the story was good all the same.

Great characters

I’ve enjoyed all of Matt Cain’s books. His great talent is to create very sympathetic characters and in this book I loved both Danny and Guy and was sad when their story came to an end. The narration was also excellent. My only reservation is that Matt can become a bit too preachy. He should trust his readers/listeners to reach their own conclusions.

Another important element of the LGBT experience brought to life

Fantastic performance from Dino Fetscher bringing the story to life. The characters and themes feel all too familiar.
