About this listen

One Breath at a Time: Buddhism and the Twelve Steps has established itself as a classic, a bellwether of the most significant recovery movement of the 21st century, combining Buddhist mindfulness practices with a 12-step recovery program.

Published in 2004, One Breath at a Time has never lost its place as the best-selling Buddhist recovery book. We are proud to present an audio edition of this transformative work.

What gives the book its enduring value is Griffin's intimate and revealing tales of his own and other's addiction and recovery, combined with his unique capacity to translate traditional 12-step concepts like powerlessness, higher power, and character defects into meaningful contemporary terms. He explores all this through the lens of the core concepts of Buddhism: the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, mindfulness, loving-kindness, and more. The result is a book that has transformed the lives of thousands of addicts and alcoholics.

Narrated by Kevin himself, the audio version brings this classic book to life.

This is in a niche topic so I wasn't sure how good the writing would be. I was very happy to find it is top quality - very entertaining, easy to listen to and full of insight and wisdom.

If are atheist but feel closer to Buddhist ideas and struggling with the idea of higher power this book is very helpful. I also learned much more about the steps.

Great for anyone who is doing 12 steps

As a new observer to Buddhism and an alcoholic working/studying/living the 12 steps again this year;this was a fantastic synergy of both.

I’ve never bookmarked and added notes to an audible book before but found myself constantly stoping and marking chapters as they spoke to me constantly. I spent most of my time listening to the book on my daily walk or walking to work and must have seemed strange to people as I constantly stopped and said out loud “Of course!” And then feverishly typed in notes smiling. Thank you Kevin for your service writing this book…. It’s given me a much needed fresh perspective for my spiritual growth. 🙏🏼

To have Kevin himself narrate the audio book, makes listening to it so much more insightful as he gives his heart and soul in every sentence and meaning he wants to bring across. I have enjoyed listening to his teachings, personal life experiences, and the joy he has for both Buddhism and the 12 steps program.
This book is a terrific introduction into Buddhism and it gives a very good and deep insightfulness into each of the 12 steps. He shows beautifully how the 12 steps and Buddhism are intertwined. I'm grateful for his work on this book, and for all that he inspired me with!
