Summary

An inspiring, witty East End growing up memoir by leading Labour MP Wes Streeting, vividly portraying the power of family and education to help him escape poverty and transform his life.

Wes Streeting might have ended up in prison rather than in parliament. His maternal grandfather Bill, an unsuccessful armed robber, spent time behind bars, as did his grandmother, who was also a political campaigner.

Brought up on a Stepney council estate, the young Streeting saw his teenage parents struggle to provide for him. In One Boy, Two Bills & A Fry Up he brings to life the poverty, humiliation and incredible struggle for them choosing whether to feed the meter and heat the flat, put carpet on the floor, or food on the table.

Wes Streeting knows it was the help and inspiration he received from the great characters that surrounded him, especially his paternal grandfather (also called Bill), that ultimately set him on the way to Cambridge and then Parliament. He knew he could draw on the strengths in childhood to eventually come out, and to go on and face his now successful struggle with kidney cancer.

This honest, uplifting, affectionate memoir is a tribute to the love and support which set him on his way out of poverty, and informs everything about Wes Streeting's mission now in politics.

A family love story and the power of belief

Wonderfully written and narrated by Wes - it's story of hope, a story about the power of those who believe in you and most of all a family who pull together when it matters. A book of vivid characters and the most vivid is Grandad Bill - his maternal grandfather who when he dies, you hear Wes's voice wobble and I cried with him.

Amazing!

A deep dive into the unvarnished story of our at the time of writing Shadow Secretary of State for Health. An amazing and honest story from someone who could very well one day be our next PrimeMinster. You will find yourself wanting to read the next chapter and the chapter after that until there are no more chapters left.

A moving account of a young life

I found this account moving from the beginning to the end. The family members who stood by him, especially Grandad Streeting are vividly portrayed and had great capacity to show love. He himself had the capacity to receive, not only from family members but teachers who encouraged him and supported him. The background of Christian faith is sometimes vividly made real, especially reading John 14 at his Grandma's funeral.
Above all there is a sense of his passionate commitment to make life better for children like himself, and the way he reads sometimes helps to gives a sense of someone that it would be a delight to know.
It leaves me a bit more hopeful that with people like him we might yet see things move forward and upward from this dismal period in our political history.

very moving and informative

I was brought up privileged Conservative, but I am the most Liberal in the family. Wes story has been moving and really well read. You can hear the emotion in his voice. This just goes to show that if you are intelligent, you can accomplish anything with the right support networks. This book made me confirm my beliefs in the Liberal and Labour views.
