Summary

Gideon Frayne has spent his whole working life as a policeman in the village of Dark on Bodmin Moor. It's not life in the fast lane, but he takes it very seriously, and his first missing-child case is eating him alive. When his own boss sends in a psychic to help with the case, he's gutted - he's a level-headed copper who doesn't believe in such things, and he can't help but think that the arrival of clairvoyant Lee Tyack is a comment on his failure to find the little girl.

But Lee is hard to hate, no matter how Gideon tries. At first Lee's insights into the case make no sense, but he seems to have a window straight into Gideon's heart. Son of a Methodist minister, raised in a tiny Cornish village, Gideon has hidden his sexuality for years. It's cost him one lover, and he can't believe it when this green-eyed newcomer stirs up old feelings and starts to exert a powerful force of attraction.

Gideon and Lee begin to work together on the case. But there are malignant forces at work in the sleepy little village of Dark, and not only human ones - Gideon is starting to wonder, against all common sense, if there might be some truth in the terrifying legend of the Bodmin Beast after all. As a misty Halloween night consumes the moor, Gideon must race against time to save not only the lost child but the man who's begun to restore his faith in his own heart.

Fantastic

Fantastic writing and narration. Any Harper Fox book is quality.

But I didn't appreciate Audible Studios adding the first chapter of book 2 at the end of book 1. it gives listeners a false impression of book length and puts the book in a higher price bracket. That's not cool.

Not For Me ....

a bit too sexually explicit in chapter 6 .... but that's the beauty of choice and genre.

Good

An interesting little story, quite sweet at times and rather naughty at others! I thought it was a ghost story, but it's not, more a missing person mystery

Samhain

Intense and suspenseful, but a gently told story, matching the differing personalities of the protagonists. Suitably and finely narrated, I was glad to hear that the story continues.

Enjoyable enough

Not too heavy but enjoyable enough to keep me interested. It's nice to have gay main characters. I look forward to reading some more in the series.

Very Surprising

I was really surprise by how engaging the story and the performance are! Pitty it's so short but luckily there are more books in this series. I liked the mashup of genres being far from obvious within this book.

Bodmin Moor

Interesting close to home story and the local copper who tries to hide his gay side and which all the villagers know about, the strange goings on on the moor and where people disappear and where he finds them. Exciting and well narrated enjoy.

Could do with a bit more depth

Bit of a slow burner, only felt like half a book, probably the shortest book I have listened to in a while.

fantastic mystery novel and romance

i really enjoyed the fantastically drawn characters in this story. i really wanted Gideon to be my best friend he was such abrave and good soul but he had faults which all good police characters have. it is so original to have the partner be a psychic I enjoyed their romance and how the red herrings were fed to the reader. I will enjoy continuing with these stories.

Very good mystery & paranormal

This is a good mystery about a missing girl and the PC and psychic who find her. The descriptions of the countryside are well realised and the language is beautiful. The paranormal incidents are cleverly done and come across as logical when the process of working out what they mean is set out. The characters are easy to differentiate between although, in my head, Gideon wasn't quite as gravelly as portrayed so that threw me slightly but apart from that the narration was very good and I'm going to carry on with the series. Would recommend.
