About this listen

Bloomsbury presents On the Trail of Wolves written and read by Philippa Forrester.

A chance to move to the US Wild West allows TV presenter Philippa Forrester to fulfil a lifelong dream of living among and learning all she can about wolves

When Philippa Forrester and her nature-loving family moved to the wilds of Grand Teton National Park, they quickly learned to love the wildlife of Wyoming and nearby Yellowstone. The sounds of wolves close to their new home fed Philippa’s lifelong fascination with these remarkable animals, but nothing she had learned about wolves from her studies in the UK could have prepared her for the reality of living in wolf country. And as she and her family settled into their new wilder way of life, she discovered many locals are not excited about sharing their land with wolves.

Twenty-five years after wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park, wolf packs are spreading into areas where their protection has been removed by the American administration. Without that protection, what is the future for wolves where many people resent that they were ever here at all?

In On the Trail of Wolves, Philippa vividly recounts her adventures living among the grizzlies, elk and wolves in her new home in America’s Wild West and chronicles her journeys further from home to talk to conservationists, rangers, hunters and ranch owners to investigate when and why opinions on wolves became so polarised.©2020 Philippa Forrester (P)2020 Bloomsbury Publishing Plc

Its not easy allowing groups you don't agree with to have their say but I applaud this author for doing so, as it shows great integrity. Though I must admit most of those trophy hunter sound like entitled children.

fair to all

I love wolves. I love the areas of the US where they are found. I loved this account of being amongst wolves. Phillipa writes well, and narrates well. Totally enjoyable. Wish it was longer!

For me this was perfect. Interesting topic, covered in a thorough manner. Well written and well read by the author. I thoroughly recommend it.

I had high hopes for this title but found it didn't quite come together. I have no doubt that the adventure in Wyoming was exhilarating, however this doesn't really come across very well. The plot is plodding and at times disjointed, lacking emotional depth or a sense of excitement for the listener. The narration was partly to blame for this, often sounding disinterested and lethargic, even at times when the rest is clearly begging to be infused with a sense of awe. Overall, I think I might have enjoyed this more as a text rather than an audiobook but I fear I would probably still have come away with a sense of disappointment.

Somewhat misses the mark.
