About this listen

In June of 1999, Stephen King was hit by a van while walking along the shoulder of a country road in Maine. Six operations were required to save his life and mend his broken body. When he was finally able to sit up, he immediately started writing. This book is the extraordinary result.

Critic reviews

"This is the written equivalent of Delia Smith's How To Cook. And, like British home cooking, the world of popular fiction will be better off for it." (The Times)

"Not since Dickens has a writer had so many readers by the throat.... King's imagination is vast. He knows how to engage the deepest sympathies of his readers.... It is part biography, part collection of tips for the aspiring writer. In the final chapters, King tells, in graphic details, the story of his recent accident...a bizarre and absorbing story, told brilliantly by one of the great storytellers of our time." (Guardian)

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely, this is well thought out advice from one of the most successful writers of our time.

Any additional comments?

I've not read much Stephen King but I have no hesitation in recommending this audiobook.

It provides many, many useful writing tips and advice and if you are writer you cannot fail but to gain something from it regardless of your experience level.

You only have to look at the number of writing courses and text books which quote from this text to see how valuable it is.

Not a King fan but this is excellent

I Love this book! As someone writing shorts and starting my first novel, it was an exceedingly helpful listen. Not only was it informative later in the book but it also gave gave a wonderful insight to S Kings life, through the good and the bad. I'd definitely recomend this book.

Entertaining and Informative

Excellent book. Very candid about his own life and his writing journey. He thoughts "on writing" included advice, principles and techniques that I had not heard about before, even though they made perfect sense once he explained them,

Real advice from a very successful author

King is a master in his field (and his narration is at best endearing) so you could do worse than to look to him for guidance. Insightful, blunt & well reasoned. Worth sticking it out to the end.

Extremely insightful, picks up pace late

I've had this in my library for a year but although I bow down to SK's genius, his books are too uncomfortable for me. Having found some ear space this weekend I though I'd give it a go. It's not at all what I expected. I love his insights and the way he makes writing sound so natural. It has freed my writing mind.

Would you consider the audio edition of On Writing to be better than the print version?

I don't have a printed version, but listening to Stephen King walk us through his history and then seamlessly move into thoughts on writing it is an exceptional listen and excellent guide for writers, opening doors to ideas and making that first inroad into taking pen to paper.

What did you like best about this story?

The way he took us into his story and then revealed in a warts and all telling he invited us to follow him through his life with personal challenges and career highs and lows.
With sometimes uncomfortable honesty he shows us that his writing career was dogged with episodes that were to say the least challenging.
Even if you are a reader of Stephen King with no desire to write, it is well worth a listen.

Have you listened to any of Stephen King’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to him narrate any of his books, but he is a master story teller.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

His story and storytelling invites you as a listener in, to laugh, wonder and enjoy.

Any additional comments?

One of the best audio books I have ever listened to.

absolute genius.

Although this plays out / reads more like an autobiography at first, it is littered with tips and advice from Stephen King along with nuggets of information about how the majority of his novels (up to the release of this book) came to be.

However, where this audio-book shines is in the narration by King himself. He stresses key words and genuinely believes what he is writing - that fervor is definitely translated into the recording, making this a must for any King fan out there.

Excellent Advice

What a brilliant book on writing. Whether you’re new to writing or experienced this will surely give you a lot to think about and huge inspiration. King’s own personal stories are so interesting and brilliantly told as well as hilarious in some places. His narration is perfect as you might expect. Highly recommended even if you’re not into writing at all

I absolutely loved this book. For me it never got boring. Just great.

Take notes, listen with your ears wide open. Incredibly inspiring. Stephen King reads it to you! Nothing better than that.

Inspiration needed? Read it, listen to it

I have often heard writers quote from Stephen King's On Writing and it's been on my reading list for some time. However, I am so glad I chose to listen to the audible version, which is narrated by King himself. His narration takes a fascinating book to the next level of enjoyment. Even if you have already read a print version of this book, I recommend listening to the audio edition and then reading one of his novels, because you read it with King's voice in your head. Brilliant.
