Na panství olomouckého biskupa se stalo několik žen obětí bestiální vraždy, kterou vesničané připisují vlkodlakovi. I když se místním po usilovné snaze podaří vraha chytit a odsoudit k smrti na hranici, po čase však nevysvětlitelná úmrtí pokračují. Přemysl Otakar II. dojde k závěru, že spíše než inkvizice pomůže zkušený vyšetřovatel a rozhodne se na Moravu vyslat královského prokurátora Oldřicha z Chlumu. Doprovází ho pomocník panoš Ota a písař Wolfgang. Zdá se, že stopy zločinu míří velice vysoko a aby Oldřich z Chlumu prokázal svá podezření, musí připravit neobvyklou léčku.
