Summary
Coming out of retirement, an aging Sherlock Holmes has traveled to Palestine with his 19-year-old partner, Mary Russell. There, disguised as ragged Bedouins, they embark on a dangerous mission. If they fail, the holy city will surely go up in flames. With her unerring flair for the dramatic, Laurie R King packs this novel with bloodcurdling adventure, clever disguises, and layers of intrigue.

O jerusalem oh dear.........
This takes ages to get going but if you can stick the first couple of hours it get's much better and the descriptions of the surrounding are very good. 'Mary' slips in some history which is also interesting and paints a picture of the Holy land and it's troubles. The narrator only voices Mary well her other characters are just bad. i detach myself from the Sherlock Holmes we know and it makes for better listening. The author has been very liberal with the detective stories of Conan Doyle therefore those that enjoy them will find these books at odds. Worth a listen then you can always give them back ?

Oh, what a lovely...series
This is th sixth time I have listened to this audio book and it's as fresh and entertaining as the first. If you have yet to discover the Mary Russell canon start with the first one, The Beekeeper's Apprentice and prepare to become obsessed! All the books are brilliantly narrated by Jenny Sterlin and Laurie R King's writing is not only entertaining and literate her imagination knows no bounds. Unfortunately Audible does not carry all the books but they can be bought on CD from Whole Story audiobooks. I love the original Sherlock Holmes books and this series is the perfect way to follow Holmes after his retirement.

Genius
Extraordinary in itself, complex, detailed plot and vivid historical context and wonderful evocation of a feisty intellectual female lead, but also an outstanding reworking of Sherlock Holmes canon. The earlier novels are very good but O Jerusalem is where the series becomes genuinely great literature

Different to the others, but stay with it.
The sweep of history which subsumed the story is languid, but the final feeling is of a story well told and narrated. I liked it.

Major disappointment
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A complete rewrite is the only thing that could go close.
What was most disappointing about Laurie R. King’s story?
Poor story - bland and lacklustre narration.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Jenny Sterlin?
Emilia Fox
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from O Jerusalem?
All of them
Any additional comments?
This only held my interest for about half an hour by which time I was just about ready to slash my wrists. As an avid Sherlock Holmes fan I have to say that this offering is an affront to the memory of Sir Arthur.

Not keen on this one.
I love the historical setting in this one but the story didn't grab me. I'd rate this much lower than books 1 & 2 and also not as enjoyable as 'The Moor'.
