About this listen

Sergeant Frank Hardy is an ex-soldier from Her Majesty's 57th Regiment who is scraping out a living in a small New Zealand settlement by driving a coach and playing rigged card games. But he's haunted by nightmares of things he's seen and done in wartime.

When he's asked to find two missing Scandinavian settlers, he refuses - until he catches a glimpse of the cousin of one of the missing men. But while he searches for the bodies and loses his heart, someone from his past returns with revenge in mind, and the body count begins.

Not the Faintest Trace is the first in a series of historical thrillers, each complete by itself but with a continuing story of the central characters.

"My forebears lived in the wider area throughout the period covered in the book (and one was killed in the NZ Wars) - so I could have been a very hard-sell, but instead I loved the whole exciting story. I'm very happy to recommend this book and the second in the series and roll on the publication of the next one." (Val Burr, local historian, Palmerston North, New Zealand)

Fascinating setting & great characters

A really unusual setting, historic NZ, with great characters. The history is woven through the plot and gives a fascinating glimpse of both setting and social history. The plot turns this way and that, the characters well rounded and engaging, a really unusual historical crime series. Loved it so much just bought the next 7 books in the series.

Enthralling

It struck me right away that this would something a little different. This is a good dectective story with a past and sometimes violent setting, though not distressing, and threaded with a possible romantic theme.
This is well written, informed, and depicting a difficult time in the often brutal developement of a new territory. It held my attention from start to finish, no skipping parts to get to the next part.
I will be reading more.
