About this listen

July 1540

After eight months as a maid of court, Catherine Howard has become Queen. Separated from past friends and surrounded by people who resent her rise to the throne, the sole close companion she has left is Jane Boleyn, the infamous Lady Rochford. And this is not the only strain upon Catherine. People from her past come calling, the threat that the King may find out she is not the pure, innocent maiden he thinks she is puts her in peril. Catherine must imitate the Queens of the past in order to survive.

And she must ignore her love for another man.

On the day of her wedding, Catherine begins a dangerous game, wearing a mask, hoping to fool the King, until the day she can be free.

Contains mature themes.

A well researched and carefully written novel capturing the later life of Catherine Howard. The narration is superb bringing to life the thoughts and feelings of a young noblewoman in the Tudor court. Highly recommended.

Excellent read

This story shows Katheryn (that’s how she spelled her name) as a wise and thoughtful young woman who made considered choices when a queen yet was used and bullied by her former lovers as a child.

This is the second book re Katherine Howard. I enjoy Tudor-based novels so enjoyed these.

Both books enjoyable

I thought the previous book - The Shadow of Persephone- was brilliant so I had high hopes for this follow-on. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. Because it only covered a short period of time - about 18 months of Catherine's marriage - I felt that it was too longwinded. Actually, I was surprised that there was a second book. Maybe a much shorter version of the second could have been included in the first.

Longwinded
