When a young nurse dies on her watch, Florence Nightingale must uncover the deep-hidden secrets someone will kill to keep buried.

It is 1853. Lady of the Lamp Florence Nightingale has just accepted the position of superintendent of the Establishment for Gentlewomen during Temporary Illness in London. She has hardly had time to learn the names of the nurses in her charge when she suddenly finds one of them hanging in the establishment's library. Her name was Nurse Bellamy.

Florence's mettle is tested by the dual goals of preserving what little reputation her hospital has and bringing Nurse Bellamy's killer to justice. Her efforts are met with upturned noses and wayward glances, except for her close friend and advocate inside the House of Commons, Sidney Herbert. As Florence digs deeper, however, her attention turns to one of the hospital investors and suddenly, Sidney becomes reluctant to help.

With no one but herself to count on, Florence must now puzzle out what the death of an unknown, nondescript young nurse has to do with conspiracies lurking about at the highest levels of government - before she is silenced too.

Nothing groundbreaking and I'm sure I'll not remember this book in a couple of years time, but, I can't say I didn't enjoy it.
Other reviews have mentioned the narration, whilst I agree Lucy Gaynor is no Emma Thompson, for a Victorian novel she was just right - slightly prim, slightly condescending, just as I imagine Flo-ni to have been.
There is a place for books that are just enjoyable.
I'll certainly listen to another in the series if I ever see it on offer (I wouldn't use a Credit on it though).

Nearly gave up, partly because of the distracting narration, partly because the characterisations were so predictable, it was the main protagonist being Flo Nightingale which held my interest, and curiosity,
Though now,having finished it, I am inclined to wish those lost few hours, back again, and do something else instead.

...but ruined by the numerois Americanisms (eg, a couple of blocks, gotten, stoop, snuck) and strange pronunciation (eg, pre-haps). Typically how a modern-day American thinks Victorian England would have operated.

Not a bad story obviously taken a historical character and made up her story. My main dislike is yet another American author who claims to love all things English has NOT researched the language that is and was used at the time the book is set. it's a doorstep or step NOT a stoop and it's a street or road NOT a block 🙄

Really enjoyed this book. However I must admit at being a Victoran history lover. But having said that it is a great mystery story with very well researched Victoran facts, which I could not believe. if you do listen to this don't do what I did and keep hitting Google. Wait until the very end! So well read by the narrator. another reviewer was convinced the narrator is American. No. she is very English. I got this as a free download. But I think it worth anyone's credit. If you like history and mystery look no further!

A Great Historical Book

This a very slight book. I suspect the author just isn’t for me. It’s set in Florence Nightingale’s younger days and reflects her interest in raising nursing standards while solving murders. It clips along happily enough but contains some very clunky Americanisms. What it does really well is depict what an absolute snobbish bitch FM was! She kept a suitor hanging on for 9 years before deciding God had bigger plans for her and dumping him and while in Crimea was known as the Lady With the Hammer. Still, she must have annoyed all the men and that’s no bad thing.

I enjoyed the Story and the historical background. Did not like the Narration. For this reason struggled to finish. Will read the next book rather than have an audible version

I thought when I started listening to this story I would not be able to listen to it because of the narrator . However, persevere the tale unfolds and us brought to and exciting climax . Florence would have probably spoken like this as the gentlewomen she was. A real who - done it ! And no mistake .
