Summary
Llewelyn Moss is hunting antelope near the Texas-Mexico border when he stumbles upon several dead men, a big stash of heroin, and more than two million dollars in cash. He takes off with the money, and the hunter becomes the haunted. A drug cartel hires a former Special Forces agent to track down the loot, and a ruthless killer joins the chase as well. Also looking for Moss is the aging Sheriff Bell, a World War II veteran who may be Moss' only hope for survival.
Raw and lean, No Country for Old Men is another masterpiece from one of America's acclaimed novelists.
Critic reviews
"A mesmerizing modern-day western....While the action of the novel thrills, it's the sensitivity and wisdom of Sheriff Bell that makes the book a profound meditation on the battle between good and evil and the roles choice and chance play in the shaping of a life." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Shades of Dostoyevsky, Hemingway, and Faulkner resonate in McCarthy's blend of lyrical narrative, staccato dialogue, and action-packed scenes splattered with bullets and blood. McCarthy fans will revel in the author's renderings of the raw landscapes of Mexico and the Southwest and the precarious souls scattered along the border that separates the two." ( Booklist)

Strange tale
I think I saw the film years ago and although it grabbed my attention the end left me underwhelmed
The book has done the same
Fascinating g characters and the old sheriff was wonderful but the ending still didn't sit right with me
I probably wanted happy endings and in real life they don't often happen
Anyway it won't stop me listening to more by this author and the narrator was excellent

As harsh as the land it is set in.
Long, brutal story of unsophisticated yet deep thinking people who live in the deserts of the American South West, and how their lives ere profoundly changed by a battle between drug peddlers, the law and their sense of right and wrong. The highly skilled narrator brings the story brilliantly to life with an excellent grasp of the region's dialogue and accents, and their taciturn reluctance for long, detailed explanations.
I was not aware that Cognac McCarthy was such a prolific writer, as the only other work of his I have read is his "All the Pretty Horses" a tale of boyish rebellion, which takes the reader from the bleak farmlands of Texas to the equally bleak and cruel towns and villages of Mexican border country. This story was filmed, as was "No Country for Old Men", but the first story was a disappointing approximation of the excellent book which fortunately cannot be said of "No Country" the casting of which was excellent and the acting first class, especially that of Billy Bob Thornton as the ageing sheriff and Joaquin Bardim, as Seguerro the man with no scruples.
Highly recommended, as is the film of the book.

Nihilistic
Beautiful thought provoking writing, poetic almost. Bit too nihilistic a view of the world for my taste

Dark but gripping
Loved the film of this and didn't realise until looking at the credits that it was based on a Cormac McCarthy book. Having adored his 'The Road' I downloaded this book as soon as I saw it was here on Audible. It's probably not quite as dark as The Road but still pretty chilling and a gripping read. I recommend it.

I loved it
Excellently read. I went back and watched the movie after and as good as it is, doesn't compare to the books quality.

Best listen in ages
Although I had seen the film I bought this whilst on an offer, I couldn't believe how into it I became, often rewinding an hour or so to listen again before continuing, having been caught up with the story. Full marks to Tom Stechschulte for bringing this story to life.
There is a quotation I read once that reads something like "finishing a good book is like having a child taken from you" this is like that.
Such a brilliant imagination to have written this story.
