About this listen

The start of a BRAND NEW, gritty series set in Bristol from bestselling author Lizzie Lane.

A family on the move from the dark and dangerous slums to surburbia...

Bristol 1936
Jenny Crawford has resigned herself to a loveless marriage living hand to mouth with their two children. Like many others, husband Roy struggles to find work at the docks but a chance encounter turns the family's fortunes around.

Not only does he get regular work but they are also allocated a council house on Coronation Close on the outskirts of the city. Jenny and the children are overjoyed, this is the fresh start she could only ever dream of.

But trouble feels never too far away. With Roy spending more time with Sir Oswald Molsey bullying black shirts, Jenny is left to her own devices and eager to fit in begins to make new friends.

Thankful of peace, Jenny has her head turned firstly by an old love and then by her knight in shining armour.

Does she allow herself to glimpse a chance of happiness?
Whatever happens the consequences could be dire if Roy ever finds out...

An atmospheric gritty historical saga following the ups and downs of families who fight for a better life post-war in Bristol

Perfect for fans of Rosie Clarke, Fenella J Miller and Tracy Baines.

Have you tried Lizzie Lane’s other series – The Tobacco Grils and the Orchard Cottage Hospital – you’ll just love them!

I love this series, things went on as my nan would say, back in the old days, that you would never have thought of. But humans will always do want they need to, to find happiness of course. Brilliantly written & narrated. Thank you.

it's hard to believe how much a woman was beholden to her husband back in these days but very interesting to read.

The drama

I really enjoyed the time travel aspect of the novel, showing a slice of life in London between wars I and II.
The story itself had its soppy sides, but on the whole it was well written and researched. The poverty and misery in the slums were sobering to contemplate, and the role of women was still submissive and life a drudgery. The narration was excellent.
