About this listen

"The horror on the train, great though it may turn out to be, will not compare with the horror that exists here, in this house."

On Christmas Eve, heavy snowfall brings a train to a halt near the village of Hemmersby. Several passengers take shelter in a deserted country house, where the fire has been lit and the table laid for tea - but no one is at home. Trapped together for Christmas, the passengers are seeking to unravel the secrets of the empty house when a murderer strikes in their midst.

One of the best stories. I've read this book a few times and thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. The narrator Patience is outstanding. She brings the characters to life so well. Highly recommend.

Excellent

Complete escapism, beautifully read, Ridiculous plot the perfect book at bedtime. I’m going to start looking at other books by this author as I’m fascinated with this period of crime fiction.

Fantastic narration, very cosy story.

Extremely enjoyable. Another reader referred to it as "dated". Strange reaction. It was written in 1937 and aimed at readers of that period. That is part of the pleasure. Time travel.

Lovely period piece excellently read.

a bit of a classic. very convoluted and drawn out but there are worse ways to pass the time on a journey.

Comfy listening but drawn out.

You can almost feel the drop in temperature as you turn the pages. You know This is a great mystery, a wee bit creepy and well narrated. Would I listen to more by the same author? Definitely!

Shiveringly cold ...

An enjoyable festive read

I thoroughly enjoy most detective novels of this era, but must confess this one hasn't really stood the test of time as well as some others, such as those written by Christie or Sayers. The plot line is rather fantastical and not particularly satisfactory; however the characters are interesting enough, and the author manages to create an excellent wintry atmosphere. The narrator is fine, and it's an interesting-enough listen, but I'm not sure I'd rate it among the classics.

Of its time, but still quite entertaining

Very nice narration by Patience Tomlinson who brings the characters to life.
Deep winter snow bringing everything to a standstill, a Christmas period piece setting and a murder mystery to puzzle over. What more can you want to listen to at this time of year. Loved it.
