About this listen

My Search for Madeleine is a tirelessly researched, personal search by one of the UK's top investigative journalists.

Jon Clarke looks into the bizarre and harrowing abduction of toddler Madeleine McCann, three, from her holiday apartment in Portugal in 2007. He was the first national newspaper journalist on the scene and has spent the last 15 years investigating the crime, from claims that the parents, both doctors, killed her to the most recent prime suspect Christian Brueckner, a dangerous pedophile and rapist. He was closely involved in the detailed eight-part Netflix series on the case and has reported widely on it for Sky News, The Mail on Sunday, and The Times, plus German and Portuguese TV networks.

In this brilliantly colorful probe, Clarke has carefully traced Brueckner's movements around Germany and Europe in incredible detail and spoken to many of his closest friends and confidantes, as well as locating his family. He even tracked down and spoke to the family of one of his victims, an American and former Ivy League-educated pensioner, who was brutally attacked on film by Brueckner at the age of 72.

In particular, he poses alarming questions to the Portuguese police and exposes the corruption and evil, dark forces at work within the country as a whole. Listeners will be left wondering exactly how many people could be behind this heinous crime and why it was investigated so badly. Ultimately, this is an intriguing descent into the dark heart of Europe and the world of child sex offenders. You will never travel around Europe with your family in the same way.

Wow. What a trip. I see some reviews state his narration is amateur. For me, that was the charm. He is so passionate about his subject that the rookie narration only adds to the authenticity of his approach. It's as if he's impatient to tell you all the incredible details he uncovered; and incredible they are. I went in half heartedly and was quickly stunned by the sheer depth and volume of work he had put in. He travels all over and literally manages to talk to anyone and everyone with any knowledge of the suspect Christian B. It's a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. Strongly recommend. Well done J.

Painstakingly researched and passionate.

An amazing first hand account from someone who lived and breathed the mystery that surrounds the very sad disappearance of Madeline McCann

Gripping

Vast amount of in-depth research and worth a listen. Basic, amateurish narration and poor sound quality is a little off putting but shouldn’t detract from the sheer amount of work that has gone in to this book.

Well researched but amateurish narration

Great detailed research let down slightly by the authors amateur narration. sounded like he had recorded it at his kitchen table.

Food for thought.

Such hard work.
Firstly it was too fast , but probably because it was 11 hours long and if read at the right speed would have probably been 22 hours

Felt like it was a school composition being read out by the pupil.

Wouldn’t recommend has to stop half way as I wasn’t taking any of it in. A waste of a credit .

He was speed reading which made it impossible to take in the intricacies of the book

Given how much detailed research and good, old-fashioned journalism the author has done this book should be informative and gripping. The problem is, it’s extremely badly written and read. It ultimately just becomes the author droning through a list-like litany of facts he’s discovered - even he sounds bored, He races through facts like he’s desperate to finish the reading - I found I barely even took them in after a while. This book needs seriously editing by someone who knows how to structure a book for public consumption, as it is it’s just a disservice to the importance of the issues he covers and his obviously painstaking research.

Sooooo tedious

I love audiobooks, and I’m fascinated with the Maddie McCann case… however, the author, who no doubt knows his subject, decided to read it out himself. He has a nice enough voice, but I suspect he is sitting in his office, recording it on his iPhone. You can hear him gulp, and hear when he turns it off. In the beginning I thought I could deal with it, but he speeds up, and speeds up as if he’s in a hurry to get it done; it eventually becomes hard to understand. I’m afraid I had to give up.

To the author, I’d say, spend a little money and get a professional audio book done. Your German pronunciation is hopeless, and you gabble the 2nd half of the book. I seldom return books but I will return this one.

Very hard to listen
