Summary

Arthur Charles gives a personal account of his time as a POW on Java, including the use of secret radios and how he survived a firing squad. He depicts amazing resilience, resourcefulness, and even moments of humour amid the horror of captivity, where he suffered terrible mistreatment and deliberate efforts to humiliate. He managed to learn skills from other POWs such as contract bridge, chess, shorthand, and even English law.

Hard time

A very good and sobering story of life of a prisoner of war. A typical cruel treatment of Japanese soldiers . Pleasant ending

Interesting but I didn’t like the narration

This was an interesting account but I found the narration very annoying. It was either monotonous or had a annoying uplilt in sentences

Marvellous

Short, sweet, candid, and unreservedly, British.
A pleasure to listen to, with no graphic content. If you are worried about that.

Lest we forget

Confusing

I listened to the audio version of this book. I found the narrator challenging to listening too. There was a robotic aspect to this speech which was quite disconcerting.

Given the title I was expecting some graphic depictions of torture and maltreatment. But I am happy to report this wasn't the case. Unless those where left out? It all comes across as being very civilised. Ok being 'slapped about the ears', bedbugs and lack of food aren't great but compared to the gas chambers and medical experiments as well as beating and bedbugs it sounds ok. I don't know maybe it was the robotic voice was getting to me.

I can't help but wonder if this accurately captures the horror. Or if it has been edited either by the author or a third party.
