Summary

An urgent phone call from principal/friend Antonio Petrocelli sends retired music teacher Susan Wiles rushing through the doors of Westbrook Middle School, where she discovers a missing bookkeeper and a ransacked office.

Eager to keep the break-in quiet, the principal enlists her help. Too bad Susan's detective daughter, Lynette, doesn't appreciate her mother's interference in police business. That won't stop Susan.

What clues does she have? A missing bookkeeper, two brothers, a waterfall, and a suspicious death - what's the relationship? It's all very murky and Susan must solve the mystery while in the middle of an acute family crisis that may forever change the life of someone she loves.

Top marks

This is another great mystery in the Susan Wiles Schoolhouse Mystery series. The author nicely balanced the story out with home life drama and the investigation, as well as packing it full of twist and mystery. I like the characters and think that is why this series works so well, with Susan's inquisitive mind you never know what trouble she is going to find herself in next. The mystery it's self is well thought out and certainly provides the listener with plenty of drama, not to mention keeps you guessing as you try to work out the motive. The story is also set up nicely to continue on in the next book, on I guess what you could call a cliff hanger but don't worry the main mystery does get solved in this book and it is the side story that continues on. Guess what I am starting next.
After helping the principal of Westbrook Middle School prove his innocence of murder, Susan reputation proceeds her and he once again turns to the retired school teacher for help. Susan arrives at the school to find an office ransacked and the school bookkeeper missing. Can she help? Susan knows of at least one other disappearance in the area. Our the two related? The missing lady was only just getting back on her feet after her husband's death and his family accusations of murder. Lynette, Susan's detective daughter isn't pleased with her interfering in her case again but with her partner about to go get married she is short staffed and under pressure. It couldn't hurt, right? The case isn't simple and it turns out a number of people had reasons to see her gone. Then the worst happens and Lynette ends up in hospital and tracking down her real mother becomes Susan's top priority. Can she find the missing bookkeeper? Work out why she was taken, when no ransom note was received? And solve the story about her own life?
The narrator was okay but I think she used too high a pitch for Susan who sometimes came off whiney.
