About this listen

Murder at the Old Abbey is the second book by Pippa McCathie to feature detective Matt Lambert and Fabia Havard.

White Monk Abbey is a local landmark and its resident patriarch, Caradoc Mansell, a foreboding presence. He runs his household and family as if he is still in the army.

So, when he is found murdered, the challenge Chief Inspector Matt Lambert faces is that many people had a good reason to want him dead. And when it is discovered that Caradoc had children from dalliances in his youth, his family also fall under suspicion - their substantial inheritance having been put in doubt. With so many suspects and little evidence, he draws on the advice of his former boss, ex-detective Fabia Havard. But will their fractious relationship get in the way of finding the killer?

Too many characters, with confusing names, although good storyline with predictable ending, still enjoyable being second book in this series

Story line is good, and I didn’t work out who the guilty party was until near the end. But, the narration is weak. It’s like listening to a young child read at times. I persevered to the end, but won’t listen to anymore books read by this narrator.

Weak narration

I liked the story, it was simple but engaging. The characters were well drawn and I enjoyed the way the main characters are developed from book one. So nice to have a reader with a real Welsh accent ~ I was born in Wales, and feel a real affinity. Yes, her delivery was a bit pedestrian, and she could do with learning a bit more about punctuation, but I didn’t mind because she sounded so authentic

Lovely Welsh accent

Great story but spoilt by poor narration No space between change of scene so your apt to track of story.

Poor narration, this narrator isn’t as good as the one used for the first book. When the characters were speaking the narration sounded somewhat wooden. I persevered to the end, but it was poor.

The story for the 2nd book wasn’t as good as the first. There were many themes that repeated themselves e.g. characters often had flushed cheeks, felt growing irritation with each other, mobile phones weren’t charged etc. etc. I guessed the murdered well before the end of the story.

Overall somewhat disappointing.

Poor narration, not as good as 1st book

Just when I got into the story it ended. Abruptly as though the writer had got bored or run out of ideas. I enjoyed the first in the series so was very disappointed.

disappointing

Enough is enough. The story represents misandry at its very worst. Women walking on water, jumping tall buildings etc. etc. The number of times we need to hear that the a character forgot to charge their phone is priceless.
The narrator is awful, simply awful. if a person cannot speak correctly, they should not be employed to read books,

Predictable Chic Lit

At first I had no idea who the killer could be then I had two suspects and one was correct. Even so it didn’t become apparent until near the end so it was well written.

Another good story in the series
