Summary

Though Charlotte Sloane's secret identity as the controversial satirical cartoonist A. J. Quill is safe with the Earl of Wrexford, she's ill prepared for the rippling effects sharing the truth about her background has cast over their relationship. She thought a bit of space might improve the situation. But when her cousin is murdered and his twin brother is accused of the gruesome crime, Charlotte immediately turns to Wrexford for help in proving the young man's innocence. Though she finds the brooding scientist just as enigmatic and intense as ever, their partnership is now marked by an unfamiliar tension that seems to complicate every encounter.

Despite this newfound complexity, Wrexford and Charlotte are determined to track down the real killer. Their investigation leads them on a dangerous chase through Mayfair's glittering ballrooms and opulent drawing rooms, where gossip and rumors swirl to confuse the facts. Was her cousin murdered over a romantic rivalry...or staggering gambling debts? Or could the motive be far darker and involve the clandestine scientific society that claimed both brothers as members? The more Charlotte and Wrexford try to unknot the truth, the more tangled it becomes. But they must solve the case soon, before the killer's madness seizes another victim....

Another great plot in this series …

Each book/story is in itself finished but well put together and it is a joy to get to know the various characters in this series …

The books are very well and beautifully presented!!!

Time for a break.

I think that I’ll have to give this series a break.

On the one hand, it’s a nice segue into the Regency Crime/Mystery genre of which I was unfamiliar and the story lines are credible and novel. However, in the telling, the story seems to take too long. There isn’t a balance in the information sharing and the too much detail, that we’re given.

There is still too much satanic imagery and inferences for my liking, it makes me uncomfortable and is in part, the reason for my walking away at this point. I may return, but perhaps not for a long while.

This isn’t Regency Romance, in fact romance is very much an incidental aspect of this story. That being said, both of the main characters know that they’re in love with each other and now, it’s starting to get tedious!

The story once again, is credible, however there is the risk of the Bow Street Runner starting to come across as quite cartoonish. His credibility has been undermined by the storyline and even though there was a resolution for us, the audience, there is nothing conclusive that would stand up in a court of law, that would convince the judiciary to release the chief (only) suspect.

I’m not minded to continue until the end…
