About this listen

In post-World War I England, Lady Phoebe Renshaw and her lady’s maid, Eva Huntford, step outside of their social roles and put their lives at risk to apprehend a vicious killer....

December 1918: There is much to celebrate for 19-year-old Phoebe Renshaw and her three siblings at their beloved family estate of Foxwood Hall. The war is finally over; eldest daughter Julia’s engagement to the Marquis of Allerton appears imminent; and all have gathered to enjoy peace on earth, good will toward men. But the peace is shattered on Boxing Day, when the Marquis goes missing and macabre evidence of foul play turns up in gift boxes given to lady’s maid Eva Huntford and a handful of others. Having overheard her sister and the Marquis in a heated exchange the night before, Lady Phoebe takes a personal interest in solving the mystery. As the local constable suspects a footman at Foxwood Hall, Phoebe and Eva follow the clues to a different conclusion.

Wasn’t sure what to expect, but have to say I did really enjoy this. Narrator was great and story went at just the right pace. Glad I downloaded it

It has been some time since I have listened to this particular story, so my comments are really about the series of 5 books, to date.

This series is well within the post-WWI English cozy crime genre, and like the vast majority of these involve wealthy people and their servants. I guess the stories are typical of this genre, which might be off-putting for many, but the stories are well thought out and the denouements come as a surprise to this listener. The characters are likeable, and the situations well described. The series is also a chronicle of the wealthy family's fortunes through the early 1920s. I'll be on the lookout for book 6 if and when it becomes available.

The only issue I have with the books is the Americanisms that creep into the stories. There are far too many "gottens" and similar, for me, as also the occasional American pronunciation. The odd anachronism also creeps in, but why let these spoil a good yarn.

Well recommended.

An enjoyable English cozy crime story

The book was free with my subscription, so I didn’t have high expectations but I enjoyed it, and it kept me good company while driving.
In fact, I’m downloading book two in the series to see what is up next for Lady Phoebe and her maid.

Good performance, very easy to follow for someone like me, who is not a native English speaker.

“Cozy” mystery in a Downtown Abbey setting

This is a mystery of how people's self interest over rides common good, with those searching for justice can find and uncover them. A great murder mystery with a lot of realistic ,up stairs, down stairs going on. Read with excellent characterisation by Mandy Weston.

The voices the narrator did for the girls sound too young, which interfered with my perception of characters a little, but otherwise an easy and captivating listen.

Well paced plot

A Cast of interesting characters an intrepid, curious and discerning Lady above stairs and a sensible, loyal Ladies Maid below stairs.

An intriguing post war murder mystery, with a very credible plot, whose twist you just did not see coming!

An excellent Audible Plus title, a series worth paying for.

Enjoyable Period Mystery

All round relaxing listen with compelling story lines and character development. Performance of characters brought to life nicely. Have downloaded rest of series and would be quite happy to pay going price for these. We'll worth the money.

Escapist Pleasant Murder Mystery

This is a good murder mystery spoiled by the continued mispronunciation of valet! An English gentleman’s gentleman, a valet with ‘t’ pronounced, is correct. A ‘valay’ is an American who parks cars. I hope authors, narrators and studios will please note this for their listeners’ enjoyment.

Mispronunciation of ‘valet’!
