Eventually, after I realised that nothing was going to happen I relaxed and enjoyed this for what it is- more a meandering gusto tour than a detective story.

This was in my ‘recommended for you’ list, don’t know why. Pleasant enough once you realise it isn’t a detective story.

Characters are quirky, and the dog is definitely the only one with a functional brain.

The performance of Bill Wallace in this wonderful audio-book is masterly. His ability to change his voice to suit all of his characters is an object lesion for others. The characterisations are superb. His pace and timing is also excellent. As usual in this series Monsieur Pamplemousse’s buffoon of a boss creates chaos that needs our hero and his trusty bloodhound Pommes Frites to rescue the day. He does so with panache and gives us gastronomic insights to French cuisine of the Normandy area of France. There is teasing and there is comedy. This is a light detective-like novel that will elicit chortles, giggles and laughs. This excellent novel will delight all that make it their choice. Thoroughly recommended.

The book is lovely despite the fact there is nothing much happening. It's like lying on a beach, not doing anything, just relaxing and enjoying inner peace and happiness. There is a strong subtle humour and strong French feel. The narration is superb.

Another wonderful story by Michael Bond, beautifully narrated by the great Bill Wallis who brings to life every single word and sentence in every book.

Ingenious plots, eccentric characters, rather last century - the author is nearly 90 - in national and gender stereotypes. (Think Roger Moore or Peter Sellers.) Part cookery book/restaurant guide, and don't think you can afford the wines!
Redeemed by Bill Wallis's narration, and the loving relationship between Pamplemousse, an ex-policeman and his bloodhound of character, Pommes Frites; Mme P - Doucette or Couscous - is a little less of a long suffering cipher than her predecessor, Mme Maigret!
Our heroes are said to be ex-Sûreté, which would make the human well over 100, and the dog.....?
The French is quite often wrong, although clearly pronounced, which helps.
AND our canine friend often consumes wine, chocolate and other potentially fatal poisons (for dogs).
Still, it has some hilarious episodes involving Pommes Frites - the most intelligent character, and a great deal of fun at the expense of US culture and business management fads.

I love Pamplemousse stories as a rule - to read and listen to, but honestly this is very poor indeed. The storyline is weak - three hours in and the plot is confusing. Also it isn’t in the least funny, whereas other stories with the same characters have been hilarious. This book is trying too hard, and failing. Feel that I’ve really wasted my credit this month.
