About this listen
** The instant top 5 Sunday Times bestseller from political commentator Ash Sarkar **
'One of the boldest and most exciting thinkers of her generation' NAOMI KLEIN
'Delivers its message with punch and panache ... A joy to read' GUARDIAN
'If leftists feel they have been stumbling around in the darkness, Minority Rule flicks on the light' STANDARD
We live under minority rule. But who is the ruling minority?
Most of us are getting screwed over. Our world is defined by inequality, insecurity, lack of community and information overload. As the world burns, mega-corporations are reporting record profits. How are they getting away with it?
‘Minority rule’ is the term Ash Sarkar uses to describe the irrational fear that minorities are trying to overturn and oppress majority populations. In her eye-opening debut, she reveals how minority elites rule majorities by creating the culture wars that have taken over our politics, stoking fear and panic in our media landscape. Because despite what they’ll have you believe, antiracist campaigners aren’t actually silencing the ‘forgotten’ working class, immigrants aren’t eating your pets, trans-activists aren’t corrupting your children, and cancel culture isn’t crushing free speech.
In Minority Rule, Sarkar exposes how a strategic misdirection of blame over who is really screwing everything up is keeping the majority divided, while the real ruling minority of hedge fund managers, press barons, landlords and corporations remain on top. And it’s facilitating one of the biggest power grabs in history. Most crucially, she shows us how what we really have in common is being concealed by a deafening culture of distraction – and that the first step towards a better future is understanding what is happening now, and how we got here.
An 2025 highlight for GQ, New Statesman and Irish Times
Minority Rule was no. 4 in the Sunday Times bestseller chart, 09/03/25

Solid arguments.
Not one to agree with a communist out-look on history or society (and still don’t) but the arguments made about societies failings are absolutely spot on. Hard to argue with the substance, but can argue through the lence it is applicable. Solid arguments, very gripping and informal writing style, 5/5 book would recommend,

Vital listening
An excellent audio essay and much to consider on the how, why and who of UK & global politics. Sarkar is a much needed voice in the midst of it all. Highly recommended.

compelling and thoroughly engaging listening experience.
Ash Sarkar's "Minority Rule" offers a compelling and thoroughly engaging listening experience. The audiobook format truly allows Sarkar's narrative prowess to shine. Her speaking voice is articulate and authoritative, drawing the listener into the complex arguments with clarity and conviction. She presents a wealth of detail and context, meticulously building her case regarding the dynamics of power and societal division.
Sarkar expertly weaves together contemporary observations with insightful historical and political analysis, providing a rich and nuanced understanding of the issues at hand. The audiobook format enhances this, allowing the listener to absorb the intricate layers of her argument at their own pace. The context she provides is particularly valuable, illuminating the underlying forces that shape current debates and offering a fresh perspective on familiar narratives.
Beyond the intellectual stimulation, listening to "Minority Rule" proves to be an enjoyable experience. Sarkar's passion for the subject matter is palpable, and her engaging delivery keeps the listener invested throughout. The audiobook ultimately leaves one feeling more informed and, indeed, inspired to critically examine the structures of power within society. It is a thought-provoking and well-crafted piece of work that translates exceptionally well to the audio format, making it a highly recommended listen for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of contemporary politics.

Ash sarkar smashed it this book breaks down the use of minority rule as a mechanism for media and political class to keep us divided instead on focusing and mobilising against class struggle. Must listen!

Raises interesting points, but plays too safe
Ash addresses some important points, and provides some necessary introspection for the Left to explore, but more dissection of the groups identified is required. Individual examples, though thought provoking, do not delve enough into what can be done to counteract the messages permeating through to the Right-leaning, disenfranchised working class, that are defining the zeitgeist. I’d like to see Ash use this as a springboard for deeper analysis, drawing from broader phenomenological examples.
