Summary
In seinem 1900 entstandenen Künstlerdrama "Michael Kramer" schildert Gerhart Hauptmann einen Vater-Sohn-Konflikt, der in einem Selbstmord gipfelt. Schuld an der Auseinandersetzung sind die unterschiedlichen Lebenseinstellungen der beiden sowie ihre ungleiche Auffassung von Kunst. Durch das konfliktgeladene Familienbild, zusammen mit Szenen vom Stammtisch, trägt das Stück gesellschafts-satirische Züge. Im letzten Akt dann lässt der Autor den Kunstprofessor Michael Kramer einen mystischen Monolog sprechen und zeigt eine Entwicklung über das rein naturalistische Werk hinaus.
