Zweig askerlik görevini yerine getirmeyi reddedip 1918 yılında Avusturya'nın izniyle İsviçre'ye gitmiş, 9 Marttan itibaren bir yıl boyunca Zürih Gölü tepelerindeki Rüschlikon köyünde, Hotel Belvoir'da yaşamıştı. Genç ressam Ferdinand da Birinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında Zürih Gölü tepelerindeki bir köyde, içinde, kendine ait bir atölyenin de olduğu bir evde derin fakat yanıltıcı bir huzurla yaşamaktadır. Ancak savaş peşini bırakmaz, birliğe katılma emri onu sığındığı ülkede de bulur. Karısı Paula bu emre itaat etmek zorunda olmadığına, özgür bir ülkede yaşayan özgür bir insan olduğuna onu ikna etmeye çalışır. Ferdinand'ın Fransa'ya karşı bu savaşta bir piyon olmasını istememektedir.
