About this listen

Glasgow is a city in mourning. An arson attack on a hairdresser's has left five dead. Tempers are frayed, and sentiments running high.

When three youths are charged, the city goes wild. A crowd gathers outside the courthouse, but as the police drive the young men to prison, the van is rammed by a truck and the men are grabbed and bundled into a car. The next day, the body of one of them is dumped in the city centre. A note has been sent to the newspaper: one down, two to go.

Detective Harry McCoy has 24 hours to find the kidnapped boys before they all turn up dead, and it is going to mean taking down some of Glasgow's most powerful people to do it....

A superb novel with an intricate plot that kept the listener completely engaged right until the end.

It was lovely to find the latest book in the Harry McCoy series as I've read the previous four. Another strong storyline with great narration. Parks pulls no punches in his use of strong language which is always more effective in a Glasgow accent. Lots of violent scenes some of which were a tad too strong for me though I accept that it was 'necessary' for the storyline.
Overall I enjoyed this novel and will probably re-listen to it at some point.

Hugely enjoyable

I love these books. First one I’ve listened to as an audiobook. I’m not new to audiobooks, but I’m also not a super regular audiobook listener. This is a Scottish reader who does a diabolical Irish accent. I’m Scottish not Irish. It might be worse if you are Irish. I didn’t think it was needed. Please just stick to your own accent and it will be fine.

Great book. Please don’t do the Irish accent

I know Parks’ brand covers the hard Glasgow of the seventies and he does this believably. My listening was marred by the reader’s Glaswegian accent. I didn’t hear the hard rrrrrr and the glottal stops where I would expect them. I wondered if he was Manchurian…apologies if I’m wrong. The reading is so important in Audible books - almost as important as what is being read. For this genre a convincing accent is essential for the suspension of disbelief.

A hard listen
