About this listen
Sallie Latkovich, CSF, gives the listener a basic understanding of how to approach the scriptures in general and then a telling explanation of the Gospel of Matthew which will sharpen the approach of experienced teachers and preachers as well as enlighten the beginners. She follows relevant Church documents and teachings from Divino afflante spiritu, through the documents of Vatican II and subsequent documents on from the Office for Liturgy the Interpretation of the Bible in Church, the Catechism, and the Office of Doctrine Tools for Biblical Criticism. She also relies on the insights from Jan Lambrecht's work on the parables. She explains which texts were used in the earliest liturgies of the Church in the Patristic period and the various texts helped to form the liturgical calendar and in the process challenge and shape the Christian conscience. Preachers and teachers alike will benefit from this presentation throughout the contemporary liturgical year. She stresses the need to grasp the Jewishness of Jesus and the concerns of Matthew whose Gospel is steeped in an understanding of the Hebrew Scriptures and the early concerns of the Jewish followers of Jesus. As preachers and teachers prepare their classes and homilies, this work will prove invaluable.
