The #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER and OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB PICK

'A must-read memoir that you'll want to share with all the women in your life' MICHELLE OBAMA

'A work of art' OPRAH

To understand the icons Beyoncé, Solange and Kelly, you have to understand where they came from... A deeply personal and revelatory memoir by Ms Tina Knowles - as you've never seen her before.

Tina Knowles, the mother of icons Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Solange Knowles and bonus daughter Kelly Rowland, is known the world over as a Matriarch with a capital M: the woman who raised and inspired some of the great artists of our time. But this story is about so much more than that.

For the first time ever, Tina Knowles shares her remarkable story in Matriarch. A life of grief and tragedy, love and heartbreak, the nurturing of her superstar daughters - and the perseverance and audacity it takes for a girl from Galveston, Texas to change the world.

This intimate and revealing memoir is a multigenerational family saga and a celebration of the wisdom that women, mothers and daughters pass on to each other across generations.

A glorious chronicle of a life like none other and a testament to the world-changing power of Black motherhood.©2025 Tina Knowles (P)2025 Hachette Audio UK

Critic reviews

In Matriarch, her touching, surprisingly beautiful memoir, Knowles weaves together a rich tapestry of a life defined by providing love . . . Matriarch encapsulates the hypocrisies of the American Dream while eventually turning into an ode to its possibilities. (Poppie Platt)
A gifted storyteller who weaves together intergenerational narratives into an impressively cohesive whole...Throughout Matriarch, such scrupulous accounts of systemic discrimination and violence paint a vivid picture of a topic that can otherwise feel hard to grasp - one of the book's greatest strengths...What makes Beyoncé Beyoncé, Tina Tina, or you you? Matriarch poses big, pertinent questions, and the answers it offers are largely thoughtful. Packing plenty of wisdom even if neither you nor your progeny are global superstars, Matriarch insists on the multiplicity in us all - daughter, woman, mother, no matter how we came to be that way. (Emily Watkins)
Knowles has a keen eye for both the overall shape of a tale and the tiny sensory details that will connect readers to it . . . As a mother, I closed this book in awe of Knowles' hard grafting, hard loving, open minded and humbly accountable parenting ethos. No wonder her girls grew up to feel they could run the world. (Helen Brown)
A mother memoir that, like Knowles herself, stands proud in a lineage of singular excellence. (India Block)

What an inspirational woman, she challenges me to be and do more as a mother, to truly see my children. She challenges me to be more as a woman, to truly believe in myself and my abilities, she challenges me to be more as a black woman to take up space and trust myself to rise to the occasion. Phenomenal, well done Ms Tina, great book, a pleasure to listen to.

Could not put this down!

First things first wow! As a fan of Beyoncé I have ofcourse been familiar with Ms Tina and her work even pieces of her family history. But for the curtain to be drawn back was amazing! What a rich history. To be born in the 50’s descendant of enslaved people, to poor people who made a way for and on their own. What a journey, hearing the emotions in her words while reading. I can’t lie I shed a couple of tears here and there. This also made me think about the matriarchs in my family and how hungry I am to hear their stories! As Beyoncé says our future and past truly meet. Beautiful story, a phenomenal woman.

When someone takes their time to write and share so truly their life and what they have learnt and experienced along the way it is nothing less than a gift, thank you Tina for doing that. Myself and my three sisters (one biological two soul sisters) have started a book club inspired by the enjoyment, emotion and joy we felt reading and listening to your book. We have all always thought you were fabulous but now we know why, thank you!

I didn’t know much about Miss Tina, so I was quite intrigued to hear about her story.

I liked this book. It was lovely to get an insight into knowles/Carter lives behind the scenes.

She painted a really good and balanced picture of Matthew Knowles. She wasn’t vicious about him at all, just factual about his flaws; which I really respected.

She also brought a beautiful balance to Beyonce/Kelly and helped us to remember that although they are celebrities, they are human just like us and experience the same life traumas as we all do.

All in all, I thought this was a great and insightful read! Thank you Miss Tina for taking us on this journey.

8/10 :-)

Such a beautiful insight into this amazing woman’s life. From the very start and her upbringing to present day. The whole journey of HER. And listening to it in Ms Tina’s voice is definitely what you should do. Aside the fact that I’ve been a Destiny’s Child and Beyonce fan since Killing Time, (The Writings on the Wall is my absolutely fave album of all time) it was just so lovely to hear how the group started from Ms Tina and the work and effort but in by the Knowles family.
The way she speaks of her children and how supportive and gentle she is with them is something I want to hold onto and apply it to my motherhood. Very inspirational woman and you just don’t know what incredible woman she is until you read or listen to this book. I’m sad that it finished
