About this listen
In this history-bending adventure, the ragtag team of ex-D.O.D.O. agents must traverse time and space to stop the powerful Irish witch Gráinne from reversing the evolution of all modern technology.
From Jacobean England to the ancient Roman Empire, Mel Stokes and her fellow outcasts must untangle the knotted threads of history while the diabolical Gráinne jumps from timeline to timeline, always staying one step ahead – or is it behind?
Historical objects disappear, cities literally rise and fall, and nothing less than the fate of humanity is at stake. Will they be able to fix the past—in order to save the future?

Just a bit dull....

The exposition required to update the reader on the events of the first book dragged on longer than necessary, largely due to the fragmentary structure of the narrative (delivered through collated “found” documents). It felt like I was still getting info dumps halfway through the book. That said, having recently re-read the first volume, I may be judging this element too harshly, as the story was already fresh in my mind.
The new characters introduced were interesting, but I was disappointed by the lack of time given to one of the original POV characters. While their absence served as a narrative driver, it also left much of the book without the sharp, humorous character interactions that helped elevate the previous instalment.
Compared to its predecessor, Master of the Revels spends much more time fleshing out the minutiae of historical adventures, at the expense of developing ongoing plot points in the present. It often felt like a more exciting story was happening just out of frame, but that we needed to wade through setup before being granted access to it.
The ending of the first book felt complete while still leaving the door open for a sequel. In contrast, this one ends surprisingly abruptly, with so many open plot threads that it felt as though the author had been edited down for length — leaving a half-finished third volume on her desk and a treatment for an eight-book arc yet to be delivered.
Hopefully that’s the case, and a third instalment is on the way soon. I’d happily pre-order it today.
I listened to the Audible version, narrated by Laurence Bouvard et al. The narration was excellent.
Tricky second book in, possibly, a great series
