About this listen

Nick Chester is working as a sergeant for the Havelock police in the Marlborough Sound, at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. If the river isn’t flooded and the land hasn’t slipped, it’s paradise. Unless you are also hiding from a ruthless man with a grudge, in which case remote beauty has its own kind of danger. In the last couple of weeks, two locals have vanished. Their bodies are found, but the Pied Piper is still at large.

Marlborough Man is a gripping story about the hunter and the hunted and about what happens when evil takes hold in a small town.

A believable thriller with conceivable plot twists and characters to whom readers can relate. I enjoyed the characterisation and premise of the story about the Sunderland police officer who has moved to New Zealand. Great reading by Jerome Pride too. I really hope we have more from Alan Carter featuring Nick Chester.

A gripping thriller

An enjoyable read, the narration and voices bought the scenery of both New Zealand and Sunderland to life vividly

Characters were good, and the difficulty of adapting to life after moving from Engkand served as a counterpoint to the lives of the Maori, both part of and isolated from life in Marlborough

There are two plots to the story, the first being how the protagonist deals with the threat of those who wish him ill finding him, the second the hunt for ''The Pied Piper" who steals boys and kills them after subjecting them to horrific abuse. I felt the first plot was stronger and more gripping than the second, and when that was resolved so the hunt for the killer was the biggest linchpin, I felt the story was a bit more predictable and obvious.

Generally a good read and one I could recommend

A Man trying to adapt and find himself after joining a witness protection programme

This story sees a uk detective navigating working in south Island New Zealand. A beautiful part of the with cultural differences and prejudices. I loved how the author marries the two and gives a glimpse of life in this part of the world.

Good storytelling great narration.

All sorts of interesting strands to this story. Narrated superbly with excellent voices. Stays gripping throughout and lovely evocative passages setting it in New Zealand. Slight criticism on the characterisation being a little thin sometimes. But…I’m looking at more from this author.

Gripping multi-layered thriller

Really enjoyed the various tales interlinking the book. Good characters and very well narrated. Look forward to the second book in series becoming available as an audiobook.

Whole story was very interesting.

If the narrator had stuck to his Geordie accent all the way through it would have been a more enjoyable listen. Sadly, his New Zealand accent was appalling, he shouldn't have bothered. I'd listen to another by the same author.

Good story spoiled by the narration

Great story

Although the narrators voice isn't unpleasant, I am finding it difficult to follow the story as there is barely any difference in the voices of the characters, even male or female. The only detectable accent is Geordie. I, am sadly, therefore giving up on this book which does show promise.

poor narration
