La obra, a pesar de que el autor quiso mostrarlo como libro moralizante causo gran escandalo en sus tiempos, en el siglo XVIII cuando fue publicada, ya que ese retrato descarnado de una mujer que unicamente vive para el placer y el lujo no tenia antecedentes literarios.

This novel, although the author wanted it to be a moralizing book, caused a great scandal when it was published in the eighteenth century due to it's lurid portrait of a woman who only lives for pleasure and luxury, a concept which didn't have any literary antecedents at the time.
