Major Ernest Pettigrew (Ret’d) is not interested in the frivolity of the modern world. Since his wife Nancy’s death, he has tried to avoid the constant bother of nosy village women; his grasping, ambitious son; and the ever-spreading suburbanisation of the English countryside, preferring to lead a quiet life upholding the values that people have lived by for generations - respectability, duty, and a properly brewed cup of tea.

But when his brother’s death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs Ali, the widowed village shopkeeper of Pakistani descent, the Major is drawn out of his regimented world and forced to confront the realities of life in the 21st century.

The Major, he had a good heart.

He is very good ,you are always aware of which character is talking.

This is nowhere near the kind of books I usually listen to , I normally listen to crime /mystery .I enjoyed the story as a diversion to the norm, Shows that no matter where in the world we come from we are basically all the same.

Gentle story but captivating enough to enjoy whilst walking and doing house chores. Nice insight into different cultures and a reminder of how important your own happiness compared to what others think of you.

Such a wonderful book of wit and passion for love that shouldn't and couldn't be in an unlikely situation. Heartfelt and touching. It's quite long yet it does not bore. The narrator is great and his voice lives on forever.

Started off really well but have to say I did get a little bored after a while with the stereotypical accounts of some of the characters. Despite that it is very well narrated and the outcome was not unexpected.
Not the best book I have ever listened to but certainly not the worst.
