About this listen

Maigret and his fellow inspector Lognon find themselves trying to outmanoeuver each other when they investigate the case of a mysterious young woman whose new life in Paris is tragically cut short.

Maigret wouldn't have admitted that what intrigued him most was the victim's face. All he had seen of it so far was one profile. Was it the bruises that gave her that sullen air? She looked like a bad-tempered little girl. Her combed-back brown hair was very smooth but naturally wavy. The rain had diluted her makeup a little, and instead of making her older or uglier, it made her younger and more appealing.

Not for the first time I was disappointed by the ending of a Maigret story. This one seemed highly implausible and confusing. It was a shame because, as usual, the descriptions and build-up were really excellent. A big plus was the narration by Gareth Armstrong which was wonderful. He really brings the characters to life.

Rather confusing ending.

Gareth Armstrong is one of the very best readers on Audible, if not the best. If he has a better, l have not yet heard him or her, and l doubt that there is. Regarding Simenon. This stunningly brilliant author never ceases to amaze me with the sparsely beautiful writing in every single one of his novels. Put simply, I've never "read" a better writer, bar none in any genre. He can say in a few words and lines what it takes many others to say in multiple paragraphs and pages. The intention is clear and it never fails, you hurtle along at a breakneck pace to an always stunningly human conclusion, not aware that time is even passing. Reading Simenon is the literary equivalent of suddenly realising that the planet upon which you stand isn't stationary but revolving at almost 1,000 miles per hour. It may sound grand but Maigret's crime detection is akin to watching darkest night become brightest dawn. The writing is never less than revelatory.

Never ceases to amaze.

A very enjoyable story. They are very short stories so I never get them except for the 2 for one, or £ 3 sales. Less than 4 hours isn’t worth a credit imo.

Very enjoyable
