About this listen

Sometimes Marisa gets the fanciful notion that Kate has visited the house before. She makes herself at home without any self-consciousness. She puts her toothbrush right there in the master bathroom, on the shelf next to theirs.

In Jake, Marisa has found everything she’s ever wanted. Then their new lodger, Kate, arrives.

Something about Kate isn’t right. Is it the way she looks at Marisa’s boyfriend? Sits too close on the sofa? Constantly asks about the baby they are trying for? Or is it all just in Marisa’s head?

After all, that’s what her Jake keeps telling her, and she trusts him - doesn’t she?

But Marisa knows something is wrong. That the woman sleeping in their house will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

Marisa just doesn’t know why.

How far will she go to find the answer - and how much is she willing to lose?

Critic reviews

"A dark, sleek, ever-tightening spiral.... Completely, terrifyingly brilliant." (Marian Keyes, author of Grown Ups)

"Elizabeth Day has written that rare book I always go hunting for, something that will keep me breathless with suspense but also buoyant with good energy. It is both sinister and comforting, outrageous but grounded, with a head-spinning plot twist...Magpie is a book that needed to exist in the world. It is the book that was missing." (Lisa Taddeo, author of Three Women and Animal)

"The most mind-blowing book of the year." (Joanna Cannon, author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep and Three Things About Elsie)

"A pacy, stylish thriller in which suspense is accompanied by fist-pumping feminism and, perhaps toughest of all, hope." (The Observer)

"Pulse-quickening-tale." (Stylist)

"Scintillating." (The Sunday Times, Thriller of the Month)

Not really. But a good read despite that. It builds up to being a thriller, and there is some clever POV obscuration which leads to a nice twist in the middle of the book, but thereafter it becomes a kind of twisty melodrama. It isn't girl on a train thrilling. Just a little bit flat, which is why I can't give 5 stars. Well written and very well read with an interesting story. But definitely not a thriller.

Thriller?

Performance and narration made up for what turned out to be a poor storyline!
It was a really easy, gripping listen from the start. But sadly the middle to end was underwhelming

Disappointing!

This novel is so well written. Full of pathos and gives a sensitive account of fertility difficulties. The characters are really well drawn. Narration is so good that in combination with the thrilling aspect of the story, you can imagine yourself as a fly on the wall in the room.
Really enjoyed this!

Really good characterisation and excellent narration.

The story was mostly really engaging, apart from some long boring chapters around Marissa's early life. The narration was largely excellent, but there was some really common words that the narrator pronounced very oddly that should have been picked by production.

Overall a good book

This is why I love books. Playing with perspective and never trusting the narrator 100%

Psycho

This is an ok easy ready but nothing to write home about. Narrator voice very grating.

With a 12 hour round journey this was a great way to while away the hours. Almost didn’t want to arrive at my destination and carry on listening….

Helped a very long journey to Scotland and back

This audio book kept me hooked, great to see such complex female characters and for the most part what came next was unpredictable. Loved Tanya’s narration.

Gripping and brilliantly narrated

Exciting Book. I liked this book so very much right from the kick off. I found myself caught up in the three main characters heady mix of emotions and felt my allegiances change from one character to another. Gripping storyline, well structured narrative, its really clever, you think you know where it's going along with a hint of simmering plot twist brewing in the background. This is sure to make you smile. Treat yourself, you won't regret it!
