About this listen

‘Clever and astute … a cracking read’ The Belfast Telegraph

‘One by one, residents read the books and find their lives changed in unexpected ways’ Hello Magazine

* * *

From the author of The Change, comes a novel about book banning and those brave enough to stand up against this censorship.

IT’S TIME TO RISE UP

In Troy, Georgia, local woman Lula Dean has campaigned to cleanse the town’s reading habits. All the ‘disgusting’, ‘pornographic’ and downright ‘un-American’ books have been removed from public spaces. Now, the townspeople are only allowed to read ‘appropriate’ books from Lula’s personal lending library.

But a small group refuse to be told what they can and cannot read and, unbeknownst to Lula, her personal collection is slowly restocked with banned books: literary classics, gay romances, Black history, spell books, and more.

One by one, each person who borrows the books from Lula’s library find their lives changed in unexpected ways. And as they begin to reveal their new selves, it’s clear that a showdown is fast approaching – one that will change the town of Troy forever …

Loved the concept, and the way the different characters stories intertwined. Made me despair at times for the state of our world. Thought provoking and funny.

Fantastic storytelling

This is as clever and funny and sad and dark and challenging as The Change. Loved both. So refreshing to read about the complexities of being a woman.

Loved this clever and important book about books!

I didn’t like the swearing, didn’t think it was necessary at all. Really put me off reading another story from this author. Personal preference but it really jarred with me and I don’t think it added anything to the characterisation.

Interesting story with some fun characters.

A really time-appropriate read. There will be phrases I steal from this book to fuel any future feuds I have with people who want to debate politics. An important but hopeful read in a very bleak time.

Inspiring, important, interesting!

Absolutely loved this book. The characters were great and the message in this book was lovely. Information and knowledge is important and it should be available to everyone.

Inspiring, lovely and fun book

Such a wonderful listen. So brilliantly written and narrated, I didn’t want it to end. Stacked full of real characters with real social issues and you will laugh and stamp your feet in righteous indignation in equal parts

Absolutely brilliant

Filled with lovable, relatable and funny characters, a story that gets you hooked from the very first page. Would make a great Christmas gift for a loved one.

It’s pretty rare for me to review books and vanishingly rare for me to review two books by the same author.

I picked this up this after devouring The Change over a couple of days. I listened to it virtually straight through in less than a day. I loved the characters and thought the book library device was really clever.

It felt very true as a representation of the US (my PhD research was in American politics, in case anyone @s me for being from the UK).

Waiting now for the next book by the amazing Kirsten Miller.

Loved this book - can’t recommend it enough.

I really enjoyed this story. It’s a little complicated with a big cast and some may find it a little preachy. But, I loved all the characters, the charming feel-good story and the overall message. This is a love letter to books, and to the southern United States

Heart warming

This was a good book but written sort of like a fable. No moral ambiguity, no difficult questions, people change and become better through the power of friendship, community and reading. It's saccharine like that and covers some topics so quickly as to be almost glib. That said I laughed out loud on multiple occasions, I became invested in the story and the ending made me smile. Can't ask for much more than that from a book.

Very sweet
