About this listen

Do you have an intellectually disabled child? Do you feel lost and overwhelmed, searching for answers, resources, and solutions, but no one knows how to help you?

I know the feeling all too well of needing someone to provide support through the process when I unexpectedly took on the role as caretaker for my niece, and was suddenly burdened down by the financial demands of having to meet her exceptional needs and still provide the best life possible. Regardless of socioeconomic barriers, families raising children with intellectual disabilities deserve access to information, resources, and strategic educational tools.

In Lost and Found, I use my expertise as an educational life coach and consultant and previous Aged, Blind, and Disabled Medicaid Eligibility Specialist with the Department of Family and Children's Services to provide a behind-the-scenes experience and a firsthand account of the vulnerabilities presented for caregivers raising an intellectually disabled child when information is not readily accessible.

In this book you will learn how to determine the level of intellectual disability for your child and understand what this may mean for your family. You will learn the legal ramifications of age and signature of consent for your child when seeking resources. You will discover the disconnect between Federal disability diagnosis (SSI, for example) and the states’ determination of waiver program resources and will be provided with solutions to this growing issue. Learn why it is so important to start early transitional planning for your child before high school ends and adulthood begins.

Most of all, I understand your struggle, concerns, and worries through firsthand experience. You’ve lost your way, and now it's time to take back your control and your peace of mind. Allow the information within this book guide you out of the darkness of confusion and into the light of solutions. There is light in the darkness.
