Il romanzo si apre con il viaggio del giovane ufficiale in seconda Jim su un vascello, il Patna. Nel tentativo di rifarsi una vita, va in giro per il mondo, sfuggendo a se stesso, cercando l'anonimato. Raggiunge infine l'isola di Patusan, nell'arcipelago malese, dove con la forza del suo carattere e le sue qualità carismatiche riesce a stabilire l'ordine e a passare per un semidio.
