About this listen

Audie Award Finalist, Original Work, 2016

Based on the best-selling, award-winning graphic novel series Locke & Key - written by acclaimed suspense novelist Joe Hill (NOS4A2, Horns) and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez - this multicast, fully dramatized audio production brings the images and words to life.

A brutal and tragic event drives the Locke family from their home in California to the relative safety of their ancestral estate in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, an old house with powerful keys and fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. As siblings Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke discover the secrets of the old house, they also find that it's home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all....

Featuring performances by Haley Joel Osment (Entourage, The Sixth Sense), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Kate Mulgrew (Orange Is the New Black, Star Trek: Voyager), Joe Hill, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Stephen King (The Stand, 11-22-63), as well as a cast of more than 50 voice actors, this audio production preserves the heart-stopping impact of the graphic novel's astounding artwork through the use of richly imagined sound design and a powerful original score.

*Locke & Key contains explicit language and adult situations.

Critic reviews

"The concepts in this production, based on a graphic novel, are perfectly executed by a full cast.... Kate Mulgrew leads the way with her perfect portrayal of an ancient grandmother with an evil streak." (AudioFile)

Good listen

I got this after seeing the Netflix series and was pleasantly surprised by it. Some of it falls flat because the source was a graphic novel and certain scenes don't transfer to audio well. Plus it took some time to get used to the voice actor for Bodie. Once I'd got over that and had been drawn in, I couldn't stop listening.

Considering I knew a lot of the plot from the TV show there were some brilliant surprises and emotional sequences that really touched the heart. It was fascinating to see the choices made between this and the show. I'm going to have to read the graphic novels now just to see the original.

I'd highly recommend.

Great adaptation and performances

The start and first third had me confused as unlike a regular audio book the dramatisation doesn't describe things very well.

However once you get into it the story's very good as is the acting. The idea behind the keys is fantastic too.

Well worth a listen if you can get through the first hour or two.

Great story, dramatisation makes it confusing

Any additional comments?

What an experience! How do you bring to life a graphic novel in an audio format? Like this! Great performances by the cast and excellent use of music. I am a fan of Joe Hill novels but had not delved into the Locke & Key series. Saw this and immediately downloaded it - what a treat. Give it a go - you won't be disappointed. I just want the Sandman graphic novels to have this treatment now!

The future of audiobooks? Yes please!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I have to say the print (comic) version is far clearer, the multiple voices, settings and action scenes did not translate well to audio format for me!

What did you like best about this story?

It is only really the beginning of the story but I was left wondering mostly about the back story of the house and characters.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The transfer from visual to audio format I felt was confusing, I found I had to concentrate on the audio more than I normally would to follow the details.

Confusing!

A great dramatization of the story that pulls you in with a balance of light humour combined with sudden shock moments. It seemed to lose it's way around book three but picked back up by book four for a finale that puts you through a torrent of emotions.

very enjoyable

The story was good but there were quite a few action sequences where I couldn't really follow it. The narrator needed to do a bit more work, you can't just "bish, bash, bosh" and assume we can follow it.
