Summary

How can a little girl vanish into thin air?

Five-year-old Cassie Bailey’s mother tucked her into bed and kissed her goodnight. This morning she’s missing, her unicorn bedcovers are empty, and her parents are frantic.

DCI Rachel Hart knows that the first few hours after a child goes missing are the most crucial, and that the Baileys are living every parent’s worst nightmare. Rachel knows, because as a child her family lived through it too, when her sister was taken.

The days are ticking by with no sign of Cassie, and the cracks in the Baileys’ marriage are beginning to show. But are the holes in their stories because they’re out of their minds with panic - or because they’re lying?

Rachel’s convinced that Cassie knew the person who took her, but can she find the little girl before she’s lost forever?

A gripping thriller for fans of Close to Home, The Couple Next Door, and Behind Closed Doors.

Spoilt by the simpering narration!

Storyline was OK although the denouement was fairly predictable. Sadly overall it was spoilt for me by the awful narration! I’d try another book in this series but only if there’s a different narrator.

Incredibly tense, emotional and well written!

Every mother’s nightmare is meticulously dissected in this gripping thriller, with so many twists and turns it leaves you breathless! The characters are completely believable and engaging and the dialogue between them is superb. As the tension builds, our protagonist DI Rachel Hart who is leading the investigation, battles with her own demons in a cleverly constructed back story that is never fully explained, leaving us wanting more! A bit like the surprise ending which I definitely didn’t see coming! A brilliant first novel in the Rachel Hart trilogy. I’ve just ordered the second one!

Excellent story but with a couple of caveats

The story improved as it progressed to the "can't put it down" state. I'm afraid the narrator irritated me and I felt the experience could be improved. What is more I'm longing for a mystery such as this where the detective doesn't have issues. Still that wouldn't help subsequent novels. However I do recommend it as a good read.

Narration a little "twee"

A bit clunky, police procedures were unrealistic. Narration "grated". Struggled to identify with any characters
