About this listen

Over a hundred years have passed since a group of violent killers went on the rampage, murdering innocent victims for fun. But even back then, sorcerer Nate Garrett, aka Hellequin, knew there was more to it than simple savage pleasure—souls were being stolen.

Nate's discovery of the souls' use, and of those supporting the group's plan, made him question everything he believed.

Now the group Nate thought long dead is back. Violent, angry, and hell-bent on revenge, they have Hellequin firmly in their sights. And if he won't come willingly, they'll take those closest to him first.

The battle begins again.

I’ve heard it said that creative writing that uses flashbacks to fill in plot holes or progress a character or story is the worst way to tell a story. Lies Ripped Open by Steve McHugh doesn’t entirely dispel that idea, but it certainly gives it a run for its money. While the heavy reliance on backstory can sometimes slow the pace, the lead character remains compelling, and the world building, layered with mythology, magic, and mayhem is undeniably strong.

I love the Hellequin stories and having them in audio form is great.

Good character development and you feel for the characters. Really enjoyed this story.

excellent story and great performance

I love Steve McHugh's Hellequin Chronicles, so much so that I upgraded my Kindle books with Audible narration.

By this point in the series all the major characters are well developed and he no longer feels the need to throw in sex scenes, relying only on the unfolding story to keep your attention. And I love how he uses his own take on Jack the Ripper as part of Nate's back story.

However, I need to express my frustration with the narration. As we have progressed through the series James Langton has decided to change the voices for Tommy and Grayson and oddly goes on to portray a character described a "probably from Newcastle" with a strange Scouse/Irish hybrid accent. Added to that, for the bulk of the book, Erebus becomes Erberus. These are issues that should have been picked up on and ironed out during the recording process and corrected.

I can't help but wonder if this has been blamed on the narrator with the change to Simon Mattacks for book 6...

Disappointing narration

These books are some of the best for easy going in both reading terms and listening. I usually end up reading books and the. Getting the audiobook as well as I like to get the full 360 on a story. With some it works and others not so much. But these are some of the best for easy listening. The story has finally started to give us a glimpse into the protagonists life before leaving Marlin and it's really starting to build up to something spectacular. If your looking for something similar to the iron Druid chronicles, or Jim butchers the Dresden files this is just the ticket. Great performance and great story.

Just the ticket.

This book is keeping the series going on its excellent run. The story truly pulls you in and keeps enraptured until it ends. The authors ability to describe minor characters (never mind major ones) and have you care for them is an art.
Sometimes by this stage of a series it can become a little ragged but not here there's so much unanswered so much more I want to know. The books seamlessly fit with no plot gaps or issues. Can't wait for the next book from one of my favourite authors.

Another outstanding Nate adventure
