Summary

The most decorated homicide detective in NYPD history, Dave Gurney, is trying to adjust to his life of quasi-retirement when a young woman who is producing a documentary on a notorious murder spree seeks his counsel. Soon after, Gurney begins feeling threatened: a razor-sharp hunting arrow lands in his yard, and he narrowly escapes serious injury in a booby-trapped basement. As things grow more bizarre, he finds himself reexamining the case of The Good Shepherd, which 10 years before involved a series of roadside shootings and a rage-against-the-rich manifesto.

The killings ceased, and a consensus opinion developed that no one would dream of challenging - except Dave Gurney. Mocked even by some who'd been his supporters in previous investigations, Dave realizes that the killer is too clever to be found. The only gambit that may work is also the most dangerous - to make himself a target and get the killer to come to him.

Just Excellent!

I love Jeff Harding’s narration. Every character is recognisable and portrayed wonderfully. (Bravo, as always, Ed Winchester). During these stories I occasionally think, “What does all this talking(/writing) have to do with anything?” But it’s all relevant to the fabulous stories and characterisations. I can’t imagine an abridged version, as the narrative is so rich and informative. There’s a quietness too, to these stories that I love, despite the drama and genuine suspense of each one. The author makes me feel he is giving me my own personal insight into his characters, particularly the character of Dave Gurney and the relationship between him and Madeline, which is constantly revealing and invokes an appreciation of the compassion that ultimately accompanies romantic love. The regular characters too, are worth getting to know and are more than the sum of their parts, while the episodic characters are written in such a way that they evoke real emotion, whether for or against! I’m delighted to have stumbled upon this author and look forward to purchasing the next instalment.

A really great read!

I enjoyed this book very much. Jeff Harding reads extremely well in my opinion and I regularly search for new books based on his performance. This story was engaging with great characters and plenty of suspense. I would definitely recommend it.

A great thriller / crime drama

I really enjoyed this story but sussed the twist early on. This is unlike me so not a reflection on the writing.
immediately downloaded the next book which will be third in this series straight off the bat, needless to say if you enjoy a good crime drama, not too much swearing and a good back story with strong characters, this series is for you.

Master of suspence.

Firstly, Jeff Harding's voice performance in this Verdon police thriller is as immaculate as ever. He imbues every character with its own distinct persona with each distinct voice. The story itself is another excellent modern noir detective novel with a wonderful story that bounds forward at great pace, with a surprising and thrilling ending. The novel contains the usual descriptively great one-liners that bring, at the very least, a broad smile to your face and often a hearty laugh. This novel is particularly welcome in the creation of "Ram TV" which is so irreverently and precisely based upon the foul Fox TV template. The murderous monster of Let The Devil Sleep is presented as no more vile and evil than its media reflection in Ram TV. Verdon is a modern master of the hard-nosed, pulse-pounding cop thriller genre with quite beautiful prose.

Fascinating audiobook

Jon Verdon is such an accomplished writer, fascinating story and wonderful narrative by Jeff Harding, I am warming to the writing of John Verdon, his story was full of twists and really kept me guessing until the end, I am sure anyone will enjoy this audiobook, on a light hearted note, how the hell does Madeline put up with Gurney*******
