Naufragato su un'isola deserta e costretto alla solitudine per ventisette anni, Robinson riconosce gli errori della sua vita e acquista saggezza e maturità, anche se non sufficienti ad impedirgli, a sessantun anni, ormai ricco e padre di famiglia, di ascoltare la voce della sua smania di avventura. Ormai viaggiatore di professione, la seconda parte del libro narra le sue peripezie in oriente, in Cina e nel paese dei Tartari.
