Damit endet Rafael Seligmanns biografischer Roman über die Kindheit seines Vaters Ludwig. Es ist zunächst eine glückliche Zeit. Ludwigs Leben wird bestimmt durch Tradition, Religion und Sport. Als einziges seiner Geschwister darf er das Gymnasium besuchen. Er singt im Synagogenchor, wird als Kicker der Stadtmannschaft bejubelt und verliebt sich. Als Kaufmann erzielt Ludwig erste Erfolge. Er erlebt die letzten Jahre des deutsch-jüdischen Miteinanders, die 1930 mit dem Aufstieg der Nazis ein Ende finden.
