Summary

Where was Uncle Albert? The day of Lady Whilton's nuptials was fast approaching, and the spiteful old lout had disappeared. Daphne Whilton, the bride's daughter, knew what happened. She had found him dead in his chambers and vowed to keep it a secret, fearing the miser's legacy would destroy her mother's glorious wedding.

Lord Graydon Howell, the groom's son - and Daphne's former betrothed - had lent his hand to the matter, moving Albert to the wine cellar. However, Albert's adventure was only beginning, thanks to a pair of thieves, a house full of guests, and the reluctant conspiracy joining Daphne and Gray, who were hardly in the perfect circumstance for reawakening romance.

Light-hearted romp

The Metzger/Rathbone collaboration is perfect. Wit, irony and sarcasm delivered pithily and amusingly. Laugh out loud funny in places and many chuckles in between.

Fun, glamour, thieves and dead bodies.

Very entertaining well written book with so much happening on every page. Miss Metzger's use of language is superbly impressive, every sentence and every word add to the story. I laughed and laughed and did not want this book to finish. Narrator's deliberate nonchalance is priceless for this humorous read. There is some minor technical hiccups with recording, but it did not detract from enjoying the book. Will be re-listening many times, it's such a pick me up.

Nice story, but appalling sound quality.

Any additional comments?

This is a typically calamitous tale from Barbara Metzger, with constantly disappearing and reappearing corpses, woefully inept criminals, and romantic misunderstandings aplenty! This is an entertaining book, and Pippa Rathborne is a comfortable narrator, although she may read a bit too fast for some people.

Unfortunately, the stand out feature of this audiobook is the truly terrible sound quality. There are strange squeaks and rustles almost continually, and this gets worse as the book progresses. I kept pausing the book and taking out my earphones to check if the background noises were indeed on the track or from the environment. There is a strange static rustling between chapters, then the volume starts dipping with each new chapter before rising back up to normal. It means that it is difficult to hear the first few sentences of each chapter, unless you turn the volume right up (which then almost deafens you when the sound rises). Then to cap it all, some very lazy edits start showing up, with words or sentences that have obviously been badly patched in. Some sentences, and even some whole passages are repeated. I can forgive much for old recordings, but this really is much too much.

For any fans of Metzger who would like to enjoy this story, I suggest you try the kindle edition.
