Considerato uno dei romanzi più avvincenti di Simenon, si apre con un incipit memorabile: una donna giace nuda sul letto sfatto di un albergo, dopo aver fatto l'amore in un pomeriggio d'estate. I due amanti, la sensuale Andrée e il mite emigrante italiano Tony, s'incontrano da undici mesi nella camera azzurra che dà il titolo al romanzo, dove vivono la loro travolgente passione. Le parole apparentemente banali e senza sostanza che i due amanti appagati si scambiano dopo l'amore, saranno destinate a caricarsi di significati sinistri, fino a trasformarsi per Tony in inesorabili prove d'accusa di due orrendi delitti. Accusato del duplice omicidio del marito di Andrée e della propria moglie, Tony rievoca la torbida storia d’amore nel corso delle varie fasi del processo.
