L'atoll de Hikueru à Tahiti voit passer plusieurs bateaux de pêcheurs et de marchands, notamment celui de Raoul, jeune homme riche. Il est très intéressé par la perle incroyable qu'a trouvé Mapuhi, pauvre pêcheur, dans une huître au fond du lagon d'Hikueru. Mais Mapuhi demande une maison en échange de sa perle, et Raoul ne peut pas lui offrir. Après réflexion, Raoul revient, mais la perle a déjà été vendue et il se retrouve coincé sur l'île tandis qu'un puissant cyclone s'abat sur Hikueru et menace les insulaires.
