About this listen
Booklist: Most Anticipated LGBTQ+ Romances of 2024
A legal assistant by day becomes a karaoke queen by night to grab a second chance at love in this joyfully queer rom-com, perfect for fans of Casey McQuiston and Alexis Hall.
For Rex Araneta, his college sweetheart Aaron Berry was always the one who got away. So when he finds out that Aaron is now living in the same town and needs help saving his karaoke bar, it’s Rex to the rescue. Or more like Regina Moon Dee, Rex’s internet-famous drag queen alter ego. Even if no one can know the identity of the man behind the makeup.
As Regina’s popularity grows, Rex’s ruse becomes more difficult to keep under wraps. It even becomes a family affair with his mom and sister helping to keep his secret. It’s dawning on Rex that he’s hidden this side of himself away for far too long . . . and perhaps his real shot at love is to reveal his true self. And be loved for all that he is.

Rex is resurrecting his drag persona Regina Moon Dee, after having left her behind in his teens, to help safe a safe space inclusive karoake bar The Pink Unicorn where he and his colleague & friend Kate( former) member of a band go to unwind.
The book has chapters set in the past and in the present.
Along the way we learn morere about Rex and his past. But boy does he have blinders on for picking the right man, even when is right in front of him.
I am not to familair with the Filipino culture, but learnt a fair bit. I got food cravings with all the tasty food tbat was written about. Also the banding together and show up when needed felt real.
(Unconditional) Acceptance and love from parents and famiy tough some are louder in showing it than the other. Rex his uncle and drag mother is a hood side character.
We also meet several strong, real drag queens. With a lot of info what it takes to be and create a strong persona.
Paulo, who and what he is was a bit of a surprise for me. Ofcourse it is clear for me as a reader that he is thr man for Rex. The things he does for Rex makes it more clear.
The narrator Manila Luzon, new to me, was a discovery and very fitting for this book. I will look out for more by this narrator.
The joy of karoake, drag and supporting (found) family
