Am 9. Mai 1941 kaperte die Royal Navy im Nordatlantik das deutsche U-Boot U-110 und sicherte sich dabei eine Enigma-Maschine, deren Chiffrierschlüssel und Codebücher. Die Briten konnten somit den gesamten Funkverkehr zwischen Dönitz und seinen U-Booten mitlesen. Der einzige Vorteil der Deutschen Kriegsmarine war jedoch, dass die Briten im Anfangsstadium noch sehr viele Stunden für die Entschlüsselung nur eines einzigen Funkspruches brauchten.
Hier sollte ein Mann, den Dönitz noch als Schüler der Marineschule Mürwik in Erinnerung hatte, etwas vor Ort einleiten - und das also direkt bei den Briten! Es war der Kapitänleutnant Odo Loewe und derzeit Kommandant von U 256.
